You start the game by entering an academy of Duelists and you that is, yourself are the main character, or you can give another name to your character if you like. The point is, you are part of one of the teams of Duel Academy there are at least three , and then you meet the characters of the Anime.
You get to attend classes wich will teach you how the game is played, and you get to have your own deck. As you begin to beat more and more opponents, you earn Duel Points DP and the more you get the better, for you can afford more cards to strenghten your deck. Cards aren't the only stuff you can buy, you can also buy sandwiches to offer to the people you meet and make friends, for example.
There will be a time when you'll need to team up with someone in order to Tag Duel. This is interesting because you get to use the cards that your teammate has put on the field too, but you have to be extra careful because the computer isn't always following your strategy.
This was the most frustrating in-game play so far: having the right set of cards in the field to beat your opponents and ending up defeated because your teammate didn't use your cards as you were intending to use.
Either way, this is a well set up game, and trust me on this one: it's very, very, very, very long. I haven't even come across the second part of the game, and it hast three parts Anyhow, even if you play all day long, it will take you at least 5 days to beat the first part of the game and having done something good out of it, maybe even more than that. The Duel Academy is divided in several areas and you navigate from an area to another through a map, in a similar way of the Desktop of your computer and your mouse.
Then, once you pick an area, you get to move arround with your character inside it and talk to people, make duels, and even tame Pharaoh, the cat. The graphics in this point aren't anything special, it almost seems like you are playing Pokemon on a Game Boy Advance, but even so, they are cute, every major character is very easily recognizable. The graphics during Duels get better. The characters have cell shading effects, so that it makes you feel like you are watching a real anime The negative of the entire game, and most disapointing part is that there are no voices, and it's rare to see a monster attack like in the show, it's usually just an arrangement of pretty arrows indicating which monster attacked which.
The music is also very repetitive. Nonetheless, it makes up for those who are looking for a Duel Monsters experience and haven't found out a partner to play with, or simply those who love playing the Trading Card Game all the time but want a new challenge to fire up their passion for the game.
